Sustainable urbanization in the global south countries has become an urgent priority for not only scholarly attempts but also practical challenges. It is therefore important to raise the theoretical as well as practical question regarding what is meant by sustainable urbanization, e.g.,

  • How to remake sustainable urbanization for individuals, places and regions across time? How to quantify it for diversifying and targeting coping governance strategies?

  • How to identify the trade-off among scale & agglomeration economies, environmental externalities, and inequality?

  • How is sustainable urbanization challenged from a dynamic, relational and multi-scalar approach?

Solutions to achieve economic, environmental, and socially equitable growth without engendering external cost for sustainable urbanization are necessary. Policy implications for regions around the world undergoing rapid urbanization are proposed in the end.
